There was a time when a dive watch was simply a tool. You bought one because it was rugged and dependable enough to go wherever you did; a watch that could handle the water could handle everything else.
That's the idea behind the Odyssey. It isn't a vintage reproduction or a homage to any particular watch. It takes subtle cues from the classic dive watches we all know and brings them forward into something its own. I wanted a modern watch that could go from a coral reef to a board room and look right in both.
THE CASE
40mm has real wrist presence without being oversized. The 47mm lug-to-lug fits a wide range of wrists, and 12mm gives it the substance of a serious dive watch without extra bulk.
300 METERS
If a watch is capable at depth, it should be more than capable everywhere else. 300 meters is the benchmark for a serious dive watch, so that's the rating. You may never take it anywhere near that deep. The point is knowing you can.
THE MOVEMENT
The 9015 is a proven modern automatic. Its beat rate, power reserve, and slim profile gave me the performance I wanted without adding thickness to the case.
I also chose it because it's everywhere. Any competent watchmaker can service it, so if you're ever somewhere you can't send the watch back to me, you won't be stuck with an impossible repair. Your Odyssey remains servicable for years to come.
NO LIGHT? NO PROBLEM.
The dial and hands are made to be read at a glance. The indices are clear and uncomplicated, and the custom Tertia broad-sword hands combine sword and pencil styles for a handset where the hour and minute hands don't blend together. The lume is X1 C3 Swiss Super-LumiNova. Green is easier to pick up in low light than many of the blue alternatives, and it glows bright and long.
The Odyssey is fitted with a flat sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, so the dial stays legible underwater or above it. Sapphire should be standard on a tool watch.
The ceramic bezel insert keeps its markings crisp for the life of the watch. Aluminum can fade or shift color, and legibility changes with it. I'd rather the watch show its age without becoming less useful.
READY FOR ANYTHING
Every Odyssey comes with a three-link stainless steel bracelet, an FKM rubber strap, and a Sifu nylon strap. That's not an accessory package, it's part of the watch. You never have to buy a strap because you want to use the watch for a new activity.
The bracelet and rubber strap are quick-detach, so swapping takes seconds. The Sifu strap has a patented single-pass design that sits slim and close to the wrist. It isn't quick-detach, but the spring bars and spring bar tool are in the kit.
The bracelet sizes with screw pins which are easily adjusted using the included screwdriver, and the quick-adjust clasp gives you a few extra millimeters when your wrist changes through the day.
WHY IT'S PRICED THIS WAY
There are cheaper watches, and some have specs that look better on paper. I didn't start with whatever parts were available and build around them. I wanted something with its own identity and a specific purpose, so the case, dial, hour and minute hands, bezel, and proportions were all developed for this watch, and they have to work together.
BEHIND THE ODYSSEY
There's no team behind Tertia. It's just me, Ben. Every design decision and every spec came down to me, and none of it was cut because it was inconvenient.
I wanted to build the whole watch in the United States. At this price, that wasn't logistically possible, so I chose to make the best product I could and bring as much of the final work home as I could. Final assembly, regulation, and quality control all happen in the USA, and wherever I can, I work with other small American businesses. I'd rather say that plainly than pretend the whole watch is American-made.
